Using the Dropdown Question Type

Dropdown Question Type

The Dropdown item, sometimes called inline choice or closed-ended, allows students to select one correct answer from a list of options inside a sentence or statement.

Dropdown questions are commonly used for cloze passages and inline responses. They are auto-graded.

Add a Dropdown

In the Tool Box on the right, under Overlays, click Dropdown.

Click once to place the dropdown, or click and drag to set the size.

Add Answer Choices

When the dropdown is inserted, the Edit Dropdown window will appear. You can enter up to 10 answer choices.

  • Use a Shortcut: Quickly insert numbers, letters, symbols, or common word choices.

  • List Choices: Add, edit, or remove answer choices.
  • Shuffle Order: Randomizes the order of the choices after they are entered.
  • Click the circle next to a choice to mark it as the correct answer.
  • Pro Tip: Make sure the dropdown box is wide enough to fit the longest answer choice. Otherwise, the box size could reveal the correct answer.

Click Save Changes when finished.

To edit later, select the dropdown and click Edit in the toolbar, or double-click the dropdown to reopen the settings.

Each Dropdown question is worth 1 point by default.

To change the value:

  • Select the dropdown box.
  • Click the green 1 in the toolbar.
  • Enter the new point value.

Repeat this step for each dropdown you want to adjust.

Dropdown questions allow only one correct answer.

If you need multiple correct answers, use the Multiselect question type instead.
