Using the Checkbox / Multiselect Question Type

Checkbox / Multiselect

The Checkbox / Multiselect question type creates a set of boxes that students check. You can use it for a single checkbox or for a Multiselect item.

A Multiselect works like Multiple Choice, but it can have more than one correct answer.

Add a Checkbox or Multiselect Item

In the Tool Box on the right, under Overlays, click Checkbox / Multiselect.

Click and drag inside your activity to draw the checkboxes.

Edit Checkbox / Multiselect Settings

To change settings, click the item, then click Edit on the toolbar.

The Edit Checkboxes window will open.

Available options

  • Number of Checkboxes:Change how many boxes appear.
    • To switch between vertical and horizontal layouts, drag the bottom-right corner of the item. The layout adjusts automatically.
  • Letters: Add letters or numbers inside the checkboxes using the dropdown.
  • Limit the number of student selections: Restrict how many boxes a student can select.
Example: If there are five choices and only two answers are correct, you can limit students to selecting two.
  • Allow Partial Credit:Award points when students select some, but not all, correct answers.
    • Example: If there are 3 correct answers and a student selects 2 correct answers, they can earn 2/3 of the points.
    • Subtract points for incorrect answers: Reduce the score for each incorrect selection. This discourages guessing.
    • Partial credit is available only when you limit the number of student selections.

When finished, click Save Changes.

Placing Checkboxes on PDFs

If you are placing checkboxes over a PDF with lettered answer choices, you may want to use the Color Block tool so original letters do not show behind the new checkboxes.

For details, see  Using the Color Block Tool .

Set the Correct Answer

Click the boxes that should be correct. A checkmark will appear to show your selected correct answers.
