Using Special Characters or Non-English Languages in Classwork.com |
Enable Special Characters
Classwork supports accents and diacritical marks for many languages. Special characters are turned on per Activity so you can choose what students see based on the content you are assigning.
Turn On Special Characters
- Open the Activity in Edit mode.
- Open Settings.
- Select Special Characters.
- Check the character sets you want to enable.
- Click Save.

Supported Character Sets
Classwork includes multiple special character sets. You can enable more than one set for the same Activity.
Where Characters Are Available
Special characters are available anywhere you or your students can type text, including:
- Short Answer question types
- Open Answer question types
- Text Box objects
Note: For Short Answer, students must match accents exactly to be marked correct. If you want to accept both accented and unaccented responses, add each accepted version as a separate correct answer.
What Students See
When special characters are enabled, students will see a character toolbar below the input field.

Students can type normally using their keyboard, then click a special character in the toolbar to insert it at the cursor location.
For capital letters, students can use the Shift key, or enable shift-lock by clicking the up arrow on the right side of the toolbar.
