I get an error saying "You do not have permission to download this shared file" when loading from Google Drive

“You Do Not Have Permission to Download This Shared File” Error

This error message comes from Google. It means you do not have permission from the original file owner to download the file.

You will need to contact the file owner and ask them to adjust the sharing settings.


Instructions for the File Owner

Share the steps below with the file owner so they can enable downloads:

  • Open the file in Google Drive.
  • Click Share in the upper right corner.
  • Click the Settings (cog) icon in the top right of the sharing window.
  • Check the box that says:
    “Viewers and commenters can see the option to download, print, and copy.”
  • Click the back arrow to return to the sharing window.
  • Click Done.

Once this setting is enabled, you should be able to download the file successfully.
