Microphone Access for Audio Features in Chrome

Students Must Allow Microphone Access

The first time each student encounters an audio recording feature in TeacherMade such as the student audio tool or the "speech to text" tools in Open Answer, Short Answer and Student Text boxes, they'll be required to grant access to their microphone. When the recording starts, they'll see a spinning icon to indicate that the system is waiting to hear audio.

Direct their attention to the URL bar of their browser where Chrome is asking whether to grant TeacherMade access to the microphone. The students must click "Allow."

What If the Student Blocked Microphone Access

If the student blocked microphone access, they will not be asked again to grant it. Instead, they'll see this message indicating that TeacherMade cannot access their microphone:

If they see "Please check that your microphone is working and try again," you'll need to edit the settings in Google Chrome to grant microphone access to TeacherMade.

To grant microphone access to TeacherMade:

  • Click the 3-dot menu at the top of Chrome next to the student's profile icon.

  • Click "Settings."

  • Choose "Privacy and Security" on the left.

  • Click "Site Settings."

  • Click "app.teachermade.com."
  • Find the Microphone setting and change it from "Block" to "Allow."

  • Close the settings tab. Chrome will save the setting automatically.
  • Refresh the assignment for the student by hitting the F5 key.

The audio feature should now work!
