Keep a Question Visible in an Open Answer Box

You cannot place Teacher Text inside an Open Answer box. However, there is a simple way to keep your question visible while students write.

When you enter text in the Starter Text field of an Open Answer question, it disappears as soon as students begin typing. This can make it difficult for students to reference longer or multi-step prompts.

Recommended Solution

Use Teacher Text to display the full question.

1. Add a Teacher Text element and enter your complete prompt.
2. Place the Teacher Text directly above the Open Answer box.
3. (Optional) Use Starter Text for a short note such as “Type your answer here.”

This layout keeps your question visible on the screen while students work.

Tip: Do not use Teacher Notes for this purpose. Teacher Notes are only visible to you and are best used for rubrics, scoring guides, or answer keys.
